How do you handle the bull dogs ?
At a panel discussion the other day, someone asked the panelists (self included), how we can get Type A, aggressive, highly competent, global managers to feel satisfied with their work and how do you get them to work together since they all have big egos. I reckon from the way the question was posed, the person was talking about people like himself. I am no expert but I said :
1. When you have highly competent people and they are asking for more, thats great for the organization and the organization should give them more and more and more until they feel inadequate and feel like they have to reach a higher bar. This raises the game not only for them but also for the organization and everyone benefits.
2. Most organizations require people to work together and however good a person is, if they cannot work with other individuals, the organization will eventually lose patience with such individuals. As one gentleman in the audience added "No one wants a primadonna".
So in summary, go get the Type A's but make sure you have the means to manage them.
